Resurfacing and Overlays
We lay a new layer of hot mix over pavement that is worn on top but sound underneath. Low spots get leveled and failed areas get rebuilt before the overlay goes down.

An asphalt driveway out here carries more than the family car. Trucks, stock trailers and delivery vans use the same drive every week. We build asphalt driveways for homes, ranches and businesses around North Zulch. The work starts under the surface: grading for drainage, then a compacted base, then hot mix.
Most drives around here start as gravel or road base. When that base is packed and draining, we can pave right over it. If asphalt is not the right buy yet, we build gravel and road base driveways that carry asphalt later.
Tell us about the driveway, lot or road. We come out, look at the site and give you a written estimate.
A gravel or road base drive that has packed hard for years has already done part of the job. We look at how it sits: where it holds water, where it ruts and where it has gone soft. Those spots get dug out and rebuilt. Then the drive is shaped, compacted and paved with hot mix, rolled while it is hot.
Bare ground is a longer job. The Asphalt Institute's driveway guidance calls for a subgrade graded smooth and cleared of organic material, with weak spots replaced. The same guidance calls 6 to 8 inches of crushed aggregate base usually adequate for a home driveway.
New construction is its own case. Backfill around a new house is prone to settling. That guidance says it is sometimes wise to wait a few months before the driveway goes in. Where a drive meets a garage apron or a curbside swale, we tie the asphalt flush into the concrete.
The ground here moves, and it takes pavement with it. The NRCS describes one local soil, the Zulch series, from Madison and Brazos county sites. Its official description records cracks half an inch to an inch and a half wide in dry weather. Those cracks reach 40 inches deep or more, and the same clay swells shut when the rain comes.
That is why base and drainage decide how long a drive lasts. Water that stands along the edge works under the asphalt. The clay softens, the base moves and the edges break up first. When the base is sound and only the surface is worn, an asphalt overlay is the better buy.
The Asphalt Institute's driveway guidance says a well-designed driveway gives trouble-free service for up to 20 years. What buys those years is the base and the drainage under it. Your estimate spells out the thickness, the base work and the square footage for your job. Our work is backed by a 3-year written warranty on new asphalt we install.
A quarter mile drive from the county road to the house is not a city driveway. Width matters, because a feed truck has to get past a parked pickup. A turnaround at the house matters too, since nobody wants to back a gooseneck out the whole way. We also pave turnarounds and parking pads at the house, the shop or the barn.
Where the drive meets the road, the road owner sets the rules and we build to them. Madison County lists a culvert minimum of 24 feet long and 15 inches across. The precinct commissioner makes the final call on the driveway culvert size and the grade at the road. We shape the drive to what they approve.
On a ranch road or a half mile rural drive, chip seal often fits the traffic better than hot mix. The base still decides how either one holds up. We will tell you which one suits the drive and the loads that use it.

We shape the site so water runs off it, then put the base down and compact it. Soft spots and failed areas get dug out and rebuilt before anything goes over them.
Hot mix asphalt is laid with our LeeBoy pavers and rolled while it is still hot. Chip seal jobs get emulsion sprayed, then rock spread over it and rolled in.
We clean the site up before we leave and tell you how long to stay off the new surface. Striping or sealcoating gets scheduled once the pavement has cured.
