Huntsville is the Walker County seat, out where Interstate 45 crosses US 190. The 2020 Census counted 45,941 people in the city. The Census Bureau's 2024 estimate puts it near 49,500. This is the seam where the post oak country around North Zulch gives way to the Piney Woods. About 70 percent of Walker County is timber, in loblolly, short-leaf and long-leaf pine mixed with hardwoods. Paving work here splits three ways. There are town lots in the old Huntsville Townsite grid and in subdivisions like Elkins Lake and Forest Hills. There is acreage on the county roads, where a driveway runs hundreds of feet to the house. And there are commercial lots stacked along the Interstate 45 frontage roads and 11th Street.
JEJ Asphalt & Concrete Recovery is based in North Zulch and works Huntsville and the rest of Walker County. Hot mix asphalt paving is the main line of work. That covers new asphalt driveways, long rural drives, private roads and parking lots for businesses. We also run chip seal, sealcoating, crack filling, repair and striping under the same company. Call or text (979) 595-5944 and we will come out and give you a free estimate.

The USDA soil survey maps much of Huntsville on the Annona series. The top few inches read as fine sandy loam. It looks like easy ground to build on. Under that sand is a clay layer the survey rates very slowly permeable. The Annona series description is blunt about it. The soil cracks when dry. Those cracks run about half an inch wide and stay open 30 to 90 days in most years.
The map changes fast here, sometimes inside a mile. Parts of the north side come up Ferris clay, rated high shrink-swell. Its cracks run half an inch to three inches wide. Other tracts nearby barely move at all. Walker County also takes about 46 inches of rain a year, more than the counties west of here. Clay that swells in a wet January and shrinks in a dry August moves pavement. A thin base will not hold it still. That is where the potholes and the crumbling edges start.
So the base and the drainage decide the job, not the surface. We grade the site so water leaves the drive before anything else goes down. Then the road base is placed and compacted. Hot mix asphalt goes over that with our own LeeBoy pavers and gets rolled while it is still hot. On a wooded lot, the low spot that holds water after a hard rain gets fixed first.
It depends on whose road you tie into, and Huntsville has three different answers. Inside the city limits, the City of Huntsville has its own driveway permit. Its form sets residential drives at 12 feet minimum and 24 feet maximum. Commercial drives run 20 to 24 feet for a one-way entrance and 25 to 32 feet for a two-way. The form lists concrete and asphalt as the two driveway materials.
On a street with open ditches, the city's public works department sizes the culvert. It sets that culvert for residential homeowners at city cost. Builders and developers set their own. An open ditch street gets two inspections. One comes after the culvert is placed, one after the base material is in. A curb and gutter street gets one inspection, again after the base goes down. That is worth knowing before you hire anybody, because your base work gets looked at.
Outside the city limits, Walker County publishes its own driveway and culvert regulations and its own permit. A drive that ties into a state route goes to TxDOT instead. That covers Interstate 45 and 11th Street, which carries US 190 and TX 30. It also covers Sam Houston Avenue (TX 75), TX 19 and FM roads like 247, 1374 and 2821. Ask the road owner what the rules are before the work starts. We build to what they set.
Commercial pavement in Huntsville runs in two lines. One is the Interstate 45 frontage road, north and south, where the highway business sits. The other is 11th Street, the US 190 and TX 30 route that crosses town from west to east. Sam Houston State University and the state prison system keep this town working year round. The lots that serve all of it take steady traffic and steady wear.
We pave new lots and replace worn out ones for shops, restaurants, churches, motels, offices and equipment yards. Truck lanes and dumpster pads get a heavier section than car stalls do. Water that ponds in a lot is a base problem, so the grading comes first. Where a business has to stay open, we plan the work in phases with you. Once the asphalt has cured, striping puts the stalls, arrows, stop bars and fire lanes back.
Huntsville grew about 8 percent between 2020 and 2024. New buildings mean new lots, and the older lots along the frontage roads are due for overlays and patching. Property managers, church boards and builders get the same free estimate. It spells out the thickness, the base work and the square footage for your job.
Past the city limits the lots get big. Texas Grand Ranch to the south and the ranchettes along Harmon Creek run to acreage. Drives out there are measured in hundreds of feet. Sam Houston National Forest holds 54,153 acres inside Walker County, so plenty of these places back up to timber. Sand on top, tree roots through it, and a soft spot that turns to mud when it rains hard.
A drive that long is really a small road, and it gets built like one. It needs a crown, ditches and culverts where the water crosses. Then hot mix asphalt or chip seal goes over a compacted base. Chip seal is a good fit for ranch roads and subdivision streets that carry light traffic. County and TxDOT crews call that same work seal coat.
We come over from North Zulch on US 190, about 40 miles east. That road runs as 11th Street once it reaches town. Shared driveways and property owners association streets work the same way as a ranch road. Several owners can split one job across the whole length. New asphalt we install carries a 3-year written warranty.
