Driveway Culvert Installation in North Zulch, TX

Driveway Culverts · North Zulch, TX

The pipe that carries the ditch under your drive

Driveway culvert installation puts a pipe where your drive crosses the bar ditch. The ditch keeps carrying rain along the road, and your drive rides over the top. We install new driveway culverts and replace crushed, rusted-out, caved-in or undersized ones. We do this for home driveways, private roads, ranch roads, field entrances and business entrances across the Brazos Valley.

Based in North Zulch, we build the culvert as part of the driveway. The pipe goes on a firm bed at the ditch grade, and backfill is compacted around and over it. Then the drive's road base is built back over the pipe and tied into asphalt, chip seal or gravel. Call or text (979) 595-5944 for a free estimate.

When does a driveway culvert need replacing?

A culvert works only while water can pass through it. Old pipes get crushed at the ends, rust out along the bottom or cave in under the drive. Some were too small from the start, so hard rains back up and run across the driveway.

The signs often show up on the drive first. It sags or cracks over the pipe, water stands at one end, or the ditch washes out around it. The FHWA gravel roads guide warns that plugged or collapsed culverts cause serious damage when water flows over roads.

Culvert replacement is part of our road and site work. A caved-in culvert comes out, and a new one goes in to meet TxDOT requirements. The base is then prepared and made ready for asphalt.

Driveway culvert permits in Madison County

The road owner sets the rules for a driveway culvert, and we install to what they approve. Madison County requires a driveway access permit to install a culvert or build a new driveway. The same goes for any work in the county right of way, from the road to the fence. Work cannot start until the precinct commissioner has been consulted and the permit has preliminary approval.

The county checklist sets the minimum culvert at 24 feet long and 15 inches across. The application asks for the culvert length, diameter and type, with a survey or site plan attached. The commissioner makes the final determination, and there is no application fee at this time.

Drives onto SH 21, US 190 or FM 39 fall under TxDOT instead. No driveway work may start on the state right of way until a fully executed permit has been received. TxDOT's access manual calls for safety end treatments on driveway pipes in the right of way. The pipe ends are sloped, with no culvert headwalls or similar vertical ends.

How culvert pipe installation works under a driveway

Culvert work means digging, and Texas law has a rule for that. A person who plans to excavate must notify a notification center before digging. The notice goes in at least 48 hours ahead, not counting weekends and legal holidays.

The old pipe comes out, and the new pipe goes on a firm bed at the ditch grade. The FHWA gravel roads guide shows a new culvert placed right on the flow line of the ditch. That keeps water from collecting at either end. Backfill is then placed and compacted around the pipe and over it.

With the pipe covered, road base is built back up over the crossing and compacted. From there the drive can be finished in gravel, chip seal or hot mix. We pave asphalt driveways with our own LeeBoy pavers and a steel drum roller. Private roads and ranch roads get the same culvert work wherever they cross a ditch.

How We Work

How a Job With JEJ Asphalt & Concrete Recovery Runs

From the first call to the day you can drive on it, here is how it goes.

1

Call or text for a free estimate

Call or text (979) 595-5944, or send the form on this page. Tell us what the drive, lot or road is doing now.

2

We come out and measure

We come out, look at the ground, measure the area and see where the water goes. Then the estimate spells out the square footage, the base work and the thickness.

3

Grading and base work

We shape the site so water runs off it, then put the base down and compact it. Soft spots and failed areas get dug out and rebuilt before anything goes over them.

4

Paving day

Hot mix asphalt is laid with our LeeBoy pavers and rolled while it is still hot. Chip seal jobs get emulsion sprayed, then rock spread over it and rolled in.

5

Cure time and cleanup

We clean the site up before we leave and tell you how long to stay off the new surface. Striping or sealcoating gets scheduled once the pavement has cured.

FAQ

Driveway Culverts Questions, Answered

Common questions about driveway culverts across the Brazos Valley and about 60 miles around North Zulch. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Call (979) 595-5944

Does my driveway need a culvert?
The road owner decides. Where a drive crosses a roadside ditch, a culvert carries the water under it. In Madison County, the precinct commissioner makes the final determination on the culvert. On state roads, any drainage impacts must be coordinated with and approved by TxDOT.
What kind of pipe is used for a driveway culvert?
Culvert pipe is most often reinforced concrete, corrugated steel or plastic, going by TxDOT's list of the most common culverts. Madison County's permit application asks for the type of culvert. The road owner may call for a certain pipe, and we install the type they approve.
How much does driveway culvert installation cost?
It depends on the job, so we price each one after seeing it. The size and length of the pipe, the depth of the ditch and the road owner's requirements all matter. So do access, the base and surfacing work, and the mileage. We come out, look at the site and give you a free estimate.
Can you replace a culvert under an existing asphalt driveway?
Yes. The old pipe comes out, and the new one goes in at the ditch grade. The base is rebuilt over it, and the cut is patched back in with hot mix. In Madison County, removing asphalt and any work in the county right of way need a permit first.
Do you install driveway culverts outside Madison County?
Yes. We are based in North Zulch and work the Brazos Valley and about 60 miles around. Other counties and cities write their own driveway and culvert rules. Ask the city, the county road and bridge office or the precinct commissioner before the work starts. We install to what they approve.
