Concrete is the second line of work at JEJ Asphalt & Concrete Recovery. We build concrete driveways, shop and building slabs, sidewalks and patios. Parking lot concrete too: aprons, dumpster pads and the curbs where they meet asphalt. Residential and commercial, based in North Zulch and working the Brazos Valley.
Asphalt is the bigger part of what we do, so we will tell you which material fits. Concrete is the right call where heavy weight stops and sits. On a long drive or a ranch road, asphalt paving or chip seal covers more ground for the money.
Tell us about the driveway, lot or road. We come out, look at the site and give you a written estimate.
A concrete driveway starts with the ground, not with the concrete. We strip the soft material, shape the grade so water runs off, and compact the base. Then the forms go in, the concrete is placed and finished, and the joints are cut.
Slabs are the other half of this work. Shop and building slabs, equipment pads, and the apron at a shop door. Sidewalks run from the parking to the front door. A motel sidewalk is the same kind of work.
Concrete is the better material where weight sits still. A dumpster pad takes a loaded truck on the same square of ground every week. Aprons where trucks swing in off the road take the same punishment. So do pads under jack stands and equipment legs.
Asphalt is the better buy once the job gets long or wide. An asphalt driveway covers a rural drive for less than the same length in concrete. Private roads and ranch roads tell the same story, and so do big commercial lots.
Plenty of jobs use both. An asphalt parking lot can carry a concrete apron at the entrance and a pad at the dumpster. A drive can tie flush into a concrete swale at the street. On one job we may build a new shop slab and pave the lot around it.
The ground around North Zulch is a clay loam over shrink-swell clay. It opens cracks in a dry summer and swells shut after a wet week. A slab on soft or wet ground moves with it. So the base and the drainage get the attention first.
Concrete industry guidelines call for a subgrade cleared of organic material and at least 4 inches of compacted sub-base. They also want an eighth of an inch of fall per foot. They put the minimum driveway slab at 4 inches, and 5 inches where delivery trucks run. The estimate spells out the thickness, the base work and the square footage for your job.
Concrete shrinks as it cures, so it will crack. Joints decide where. Guidelines put spacing at 24 to 36 times the slab thickness, and 15 feet at most. That is about 10 feet on a 4-inch slab. Each joint is cut a quarter of the way down.

We come out, look at the ground, measure the area and see where the water goes. Then the estimate spells out the square footage, the base work and the thickness.
We shape the site so water runs off it, then put the base down and compact it. Soft spots and failed areas get dug out and rebuilt before anything goes over them.
Hot mix asphalt is laid with our LeeBoy pavers and rolled while it is still hot. Chip seal jobs get emulsion sprayed, then rock spread over it and rolled in.
We clean the site up before we leave and tell you how long to stay off the new surface. Striping or sealcoating gets scheduled once the pavement has cured.
