Asphalt Paving, Repair and Sealcoating for Hearne Homes and Businesses

Asphalt paving in Hearne covers a small town and a lot of country around it. At the 2020 Census, the city held 4,544 people and 1,915 homes on about 4.1 square miles. ZIP 77859 spans about 157 square miles, and roughly 2,600 of its 7,131 people lived outside the city. In town that means driveways and highway business lots; in the county, long rural drives and private roads.

JEJ Asphalt & Concrete Recovery is based in North Zulch, about 41 road miles from Hearne. We come southwest on Highway 21 to Bryan, then north on Highway 6 into town. Here we pave asphalt driveways and business lots with hot mix, and do chip seal, sealcoating, crack filling and repair. Call or text (979) 595-5944 for a free estimate.

What do Robertson County soil and weather do to asphalt?

Most of Robertson County has light colored, loamy or sandy soil on top, over clayey or loamy subsoil. Rain soaks into a sandy top, then slows down where it reaches a clay subsoil. With about 38 inches of rain a year, water held under a driveway softens the base. Asphalt over a soft base cracks and ruts.

The county's Brazos Bottom lies between the Brazos and Little Brazos rivers, with 150,000 acres of fertile delta land. Along the Little Brazos, the ground is generally flat with shallow low spots, surfaced by clay and sandy loams. Water is slow to leave flat ground, so grading for drainage matters even more there.

On a paving job, we grade the site so water runs off, then put down the base and compact it. Hot mix goes down with our own LeeBoy pavers and gets rolled with a double steel drum roller. July temperatures here average 73 to 96 degrees, and fresh asphalt stays soft longer in that heat. Keep heavy trucks and trailers off new pavement until it hardens.

Older driveways in town, long drives out in the county

By Census Bureau estimates, about half of the homes in Hearne were built before 1970. An older driveway may need asphalt repair, an overlay or a full replacement, depending on what sits under it. Where the old pavement is sound, a new layer of hot mix can go over it. Where the base has failed, the bad pavement comes out and the base gets rebuilt first.

Out in the county, a drive can run a long way from the road to the house or the barn. A long drive needs a crown and side ditches so water leaves the surface. A road base driveway built that way carries traffic now and can take asphalt or chip seal later. Private roads and ranch roads get the same base work on a bigger scale.

Business lots on the Highway 6 / Market Street corridor

Two rail lines crossed at Hearne, and with the cotton gins they made it the region's center for cotton marketing. Union Pacific lines along US 79 and Highway 6 still meet in town. In July 2026, the City of Hearne said it is updating standards for the Highway 6 / Market Street corridor. The aim is to attract highway retail, hotels and logistics.

The city's Downtown Heritage District covers Magnolia, Cedar, 4th and 5th Streets, with flexible parking requirements proposed. Before laying out a new lot, check the current site rules with the city's Planning and Development Services Department.

Parking lot paving for a motel, a church, a shop or an equipment yard starts with grading and base. Where trucks run and turn, the lot gets a heavier section than the parking stalls. On an older lot, crack filling and sealcoating help keep water out of the base. On a new or resealed lot, parking lot striping marks the stalls, arrows, fire lanes and accessible spaces.

Who sets the rules where a driveway meets the road in Hearne?

That depends on whose road it is. Highway 6, US 79, US 190 and the FM roads here are state right of way in TxDOT's Bryan District. That includes FM 485, the old US 190 route west of town toward Cameron. A driveway onto any of them needs TxDOT Form 1058, filed through the district office.

No work starts on the right of way until the permit is fully executed and TxDOT has 24-hour notice. A TxDOT inspector then reviews the finished driveway. On a Robertson County road, check with the precinct commissioner before any work in the county right of way. Inside the city limits, ask the City of Hearne before work in the street right of way.

Whichever road it is, we build the drive and any driveway culvert to that road owner's rules. The estimate spells out the thickness, the base work and the square footage for your job.

Hearne FAQ

Questions From Hearne Property Owners

A few of the questions we hear most around Hearne. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Call (979) 595-5944

What does asphalt paving cost in Hearne?
It depends on the size of the job, the base work and the material cost. Mileage counts too, since Hearne is about 41 road miles from North Zulch. We come out, look at the site, measure it and give you a free estimate. We put a 3-year written warranty on new asphalt we install.
Do you work in Calvert and the rest of Robertson County?
Yes. Calvert is nine miles north of Hearne on Highway 6, and Franklin is twelve miles northeast on US 79. We also work around Bremond, Mumford, Benchley and Valley Junction. Call or text (979) 595-5944 and we will come look at the site.
Does a driveway onto Highway 6 or US 79 need a TxDOT permit?
Yes, both are state right of way, so the driveway needs TxDOT Form 1058 through the Bryan District office. The property owner, or someone they authorize, applies. Once the permit is in hand, we build the drive to it. Our guide explains how a TxDOT driveway permit works.
Chip seal or hot mix for a long drive outside Hearne?
It depends on the traffic and the finish you want. Chip seal is asphalt emulsion sprayed on the base, with rock spread and rolled in, in two or three courses. It suits long rural drives and private roads with light traffic. Hot mix gives a smoother surface and holds up better where loaded trucks turn.
Can you pave a business lot on Highway 6 while it stays open?
We plan the work in phases with you so the business can keep operating. Paving one section at a time lets part of the lot stay in use. Each new section needs time to cure before traffic goes back on it. Striping goes down once the new asphalt is ready.
