Asphalt paving in Brenham covers a county seat and the rolling country around it. Brenham is the seat of Washington County, on US 290, and Blinn College has its roots here. Census Bureau estimates put the city at about 18,600 people in about 8,300 homes. In town the work is driveways and business lots; out in the county, it is long drives off county roads.
JEJ Asphalt & Concrete Recovery is based in North Zulch, and Brenham is the southwest edge of our area. We come down Highway 21 to Bryan, take Highway 6 south through Navasota, then Highway 105 west into town. Here we take on asphalt driveways, business and church lots, and larger paving and chip seal projects. Call or text (979) 595-5944 for a free estimate.

Washington County lies in the Blackland Prairies region, on gently rolling land 200 to 500 feet above sea level. Across most of the county, shallow to deep clayey soils sit over a bed of chalk. Along the Brazos River, the soils are brownish to reddish, cracking and clayey or loamy.
A soil series even carries the town's name. The Brenham series, established in Washington County in 1978, is a deep, well drained soil of clay loam and clay. Wet clay swells, and dry clay shrinks and cracks. Pavement laid right on clay that moves will crack along with it.
Washington County gets about forty inches of rain a year, and July highs average 96 degrees. Water that sits under a driveway softens the base, so drainage and base work come first. We grade the site and compact the base, then lay hot mix with our own LeeBoy pavers. Fresh asphalt stays soft longer in summer heat, so keep heavy trucks off it until it hardens.
The median home in Brenham was built in 1983, by Census Bureau estimates. About a third of the city's homes went up in 2000 or later. A little under a third were built before 1970. The Main Street Program has renovated downtown Brenham, and several Victorian homes in town have been restored.
On an older driveway, what lies under the pavement decides the fix. If the old pavement is sound, an asphalt overlay puts a new layer of hot mix over it. Where the base has failed, the bad areas get cut out and rebuilt first, and potholes call for asphalt repair. New homes get driveways built from the ground up, backed by a 3-year written warranty on new asphalt we install.
Around Chappell Hill, Burton and Independence, a driveway can run a long way from the road to the house. On a long drive with light traffic, chip seal is often the better fit. County and TxDOT crews call it seal coat, a different job from sealcoating a parking lot. Where paving can wait, a road base driveway with a crown sheds water and can take asphalt later.
Brenham sits on US 290, which crosses the county east to west. Highway 36 runs north from Brenham toward Caldwell. Highway 105 heads east from downtown, across the Brazos River and on through Navasota. A business or church lot on one of these roads has to carry its own mix of cars and trucks.
Parking lot paving starts with grading for drainage and a compacted base. Where loaded trucks turn or a dumpster sits, the lot needs a heavier section than the parking stalls. We plan the work in phases with you so the business can keep operating. After paving, parking lot striping marks the stalls, arrows, fire lanes and accessible spaces.
Older lots need upkeep that keeps water out of the base. Cracks get filled first, then sealcoating goes on and the lot gets restriped. HOAs and POAs with private roads or subdivision streets get the same base-first work, in hot mix or chip seal.
That depends on where the property sits and whose road the driveway meets. Inside the city limits, the City of Brenham lists driveways, commercial parking and sidewalks among work that needs a permit. The city's Development Services Department says to apply and get the permit before any construction starts.
Outside the city, a driveway fronting a county-maintained road needs a Washington County culvert permit. The county's standards manual, adopted in March 2026, calls for a pipe at least 18 inches across. For a home, the pipe runs 24 to 40 feet long, in corrugated metal or reinforced concrete only. The manual leaves the driveway surface to the landowner to maintain.
US 290, Highway 36 and Highway 105 are state right of way in TxDOT's Bryan District. A driveway onto one needs TxDOT Form 1058, and the property owner or an authorized representative applies. No work starts in the right of way until the permit is fully executed and TxDOT has 24-hour notice. Whichever road it is, you apply, and we build the drive and the driveway culvert to the permit.
