Navasota sits on a bend of the Navasota River in southeastern Grimes County. The town held 7,643 people at the 2020 Census. The 2024 Census estimate puts it near 9,471. Inside the old grid the lots are narrow and the driveways are short. Outside the city limits, ZIP 77868 covers about 278 square miles of ranch and acreage country, where driveways run long.
JEJ Asphalt & Concrete Recovery is based in North Zulch, about 49 road miles north of Navasota. We come down Highway 21 to Bryan, then south on Highway 6 into town. Asphalt paving is the main job here, from asphalt driveways at the house to parking lot paving for a business. We also chip seal, sealcoat, fill cracks, patch and stripe. Call or text (979) 595-5944 and we will come look at the site and give you a free estimate.

The ground under town is Mabank fine sandy loam. It looks sandy on top, but the clay under it drains very slowly. The soil survey records that clay staying saturated near the surface through winter and spring. Water sits in it and the ground swells, then shrinks and cracks open in a dry summer.
Down in the bottoms it gets heavier. Along the river and the creeks the soil turns to Gladewater and Ships clay, both rated very slow draining. Their shrink and swell measure runs near 13 percent, well above the ground around North Zulch. Asphalt laid straight on clay like that will crack and dish.
So the base and the drainage decide how long the pavement lasts. We grade the site to move water first. Then the base goes down and gets compacted. Then hot mix asphalt is laid with our own LeeBoy pavers and rolled while it is hot. The city works the same way on its own streets. Its street program stabilizes the existing road material with cement. A 2 inch hot mix surface course goes over that.
Most of the Navasota area is not in town. ZIP 77868 held 16,647 people at the 2020 Census, spread over about 278 square miles. The city itself covers about 8 square miles. The rest is county road country: cattle, hay meadows, post oak and long drives back to the house.
On a long drive the material choice matters. A chip seal surface over a prepared base suits ranch roads and long rural driveways. County and TxDOT crews call that a seal coat. Where a hard surface can wait, a road base drive holds up with a crown, ditches and real compaction. That same base carries asphalt or chip seal later.
Driveway work on a county road needs a Grimes County permit. The Road Department permit covers driveways and culverts on public and private roads. The culvert has to be at least 24 feet long. You stake the spot with flagged t-posts. The county sets the flowline before work starts and inspects the culvert once it is in. We build to those rules.
Navasota business pavement sits on a handful of roads. Highway 6 carries the through traffic past town. Highway 6 Business runs down La Salle Street into the old center. Washington Avenue is Highway 105, the main street east and west. Highway 90, FM 3090 and FM 1227 feed the rest of the county in.
Those roads are where the lots are: restaurants, shops, churches and motels. The industrial yards sit on the north and south edges of town. Grimes County keeps growing, from 29,296 people in 2020 to an estimated 33,448 in 2024. We build new lots, replace failed ones, and put heavier sections where trucks turn and where the dumpster sits. We plan the work in phases with you so a business can stay open.
After the paving comes the rest of the lot. Fresh pavement gets a layout and striping: stalls, arrows, stop bars and fire lanes. Accessible spaces and access aisles are marked to the Texas Accessibility Standards. An older lot is usually a different job, closer to crack filling, sealcoating and restriping on a schedule.
Downtown Navasota is old pavement on a tight grid. The town was one of five Texas cities chosen for the National Main Street program in 1980. Driveways there are short, the alleys are narrow, and the edges crumble where cars turn off the street.
Some worn driveways only need a new surface. If the base is sound and the top is just tired, an overlay costs less than tearing it out. If the surface is alligator cracked, the base under it has failed. Then asphalt repair means cutting the bad area out and rebuilding the base first. We will tell you which one you have.
The site visit and the estimate are free. The estimate spells out the thickness, the base work and the square footage for your job. We put a 3-year written warranty on new asphalt we install.
