Asphalt millings are recycled asphalt. Old pavement gets ground off a road or a parking lot by a milling machine, then crushed and screened. The rock keeps the asphalt binder it was paved with, so millings pack darker and tighter than loose rock. Spread and rolled on shaped ground, asphalt millings make a working driveway, ranch road, lot or pad.
We haul millings and processed millings around North Zulch and the Brazos Valley. On a full job we shape the ground, spread the millings, grade them and roll them tight. A millings surface sits between road base and hot mix asphalt paving. It packs firmer than loose rock, and it is not a finished hot mix pavement.

Millings are what comes off a road when its old asphalt is ground away. The Federal Highway Administration calls the material reclaimed asphalt pavement: removed or reprocessed pavement that still holds asphalt and aggregate. A milling machine takes up to about two inches of surface in one pass. It is then crushed and screened.
There are two grades, and they behave differently. Raw millings come off the road in mixed sizes and can carry chunks. Processed millings have been crushed and screened to a more even size, so they spread flatter and roll tighter. That federal guidance calls properly crushed and screened recycled asphalt well graded rock still coated in asphalt cement.
Millings are a surface course, and they do not behave like hot mix. Hot mix asphalt is blended hot at a plant, laid with a paver and rolled into a sealed mat. Millings go down cold and lock together under the roller and traffic. What you get is a firm, dark, textured surface, not a finished pavement.
The ground under the drive decides how the millings hold up. Around North Zulch and across Madison County, a few inches of sandy loam sit on dense clay. The USDA calls it the Zulch series, and it drains very slowly. In a dry summer it cracks up to an inch and a half wide, 40 inches deep.
That clay swells shut when the rain returns. So the first work is grading. We cut the shape of the drive and set a crown so water sheds to the sides. Ditches get opened, and a drive that carries loaded trucks gets road base under the millings.
Then the millings go down. We spread them, grade them to the shape we set and roll them with a double steel drum roller. Heat is on your side here: the Federal Highway Administration notes that stockpiled recycled asphalt can harden in warm weather. A surface rolled in a Brazos Valley July knits up faster than one rolled in January.
Millings suit long rural drives, ranch and field roads, shop pads and equipment yards. They suit a drive that already has rock on it and needs something firmer. They take farm trucks, gooseneck trailers and daily traffic on a country place. At a house in town, where you want a clean black mat, an asphalt driveway is the better fit.
Millings also have limits worth knowing before you buy a load. The Federal Highway Administration reports that recycled asphalt on its own can carry somewhat less load than conventional base rock. TxDOT caps recycled asphalt at 20 percent by weight in its flexible base unless the plans say otherwise. So millings work over a sound base, not as the base itself.
We also deliver millings and processed millings by the load out of North Zulch. What a load runs depends on the material cost and the mileage to your place. Some places start with millings and put a chip seal surface over them later. That works where the millings have settled and rolled tight, with drainage in place.

We come out, look at the ground, measure the area and see where the water goes. Then the estimate spells out the square footage, the base work and the thickness.
We shape the site so water runs off it, then put the base down and compact it. Soft spots and failed areas get dug out and rebuilt before anything goes over them.
Hot mix asphalt is laid with our LeeBoy pavers and rolled while it is still hot. Chip seal jobs get emulsion sprayed, then rock spread over it and rolled in.
We clean the site up before we leave and tell you how long to stay off the new surface. Striping or sealcoating gets scheduled once the pavement has cured.
