Hot rubber crack filling before water reaches the base

Asphalt crack filling keeps water out of the cracks in your driveway, parking lot or road. A crack is an open door into the pavement. Rain runs down it, soaks the base and softens the ground underneath. Once that base gets wet and starts moving, the cracks widen and the edges break away.

We fill cracks with hot rubber sealant, on its own or ahead of sealcoating. The work covers driveways at the house, lots at businesses and churches, and private roads and ranch roads. JEJ is based in North Zulch and works the Brazos Valley and about 60 miles around. Call or text (979) 595-5944 for a free estimate.

What We Handle

  • Hot rubber sealant heated and pumped in with a crack filling machine
  • Cracks blown clean of dirt and old material, and dry before sealant goes in
  • Sealant pumped in under pressure so it fills to the bottom of the crack
  • The top squeegeed into a narrow band over the crack
  • A light sanding over fresh sealant so it does not pick up on tires
  • Driveways, parking lots, shop yards, private roads and ranch roads
  • Crack filling on its own or as the prep step before sealcoating
  • A look at the pavement first, so you know which cracks fill and which need patching

Why Asphalt Cracks Spread on Brazos Valley Clay

A crack is how water gets under your pavement. Rain runs into it and soaks the base and the soil below. Wet base loses strength, and the asphalt over it starts to flex and break.

The ground around North Zulch is shrink-swell clay. The USDA's Zulch soil series is one of those clays. The official description records cracks half an inch to an inch and a half wide. Those cracks reach 40 inches deep in a dry spell, then swell shut when the rain comes back.

Madisonville averages about 45 inches of rain a year and about 100 days at or above 90 degrees. Ground that opens and closes like that works on pavement from below all year. Filling cracks early keeps the water out while the clay is moving.

Crack Sealing or Crack Filling: What Is the Difference?

Both keep water out, but they suit different cracks. Federal Highway Administration guidance splits them by how much a crack moves in a year. A crack that opens and closes about an eighth of an inch is a working crack. Those get sealed, and cracks that barely move get filled instead.

That same guidance puts both treatments on cracks from about an eighth of an inch to an inch wide. TxDOT starts at an eighth of an inch in its own crack sealing spec. The spec also calls for dry sand in cracks wider than half an inch. Hairline cracks have nothing in them to fill yet.

Some cracking is not a crack problem at all. Alligator cracking, the connected pattern that looks like lizard skin, comes from a weak or wet base. Sealant will not hold that together, so those areas need asphalt repair and patching instead. Heavy cracking across a whole surface can mean an overlay once the failed spots are rebuilt.

How Hot Rubber Crack Filling Is Done

Cleaning the crack comes first, and that step decides how long the fill lasts. We blow the crack out with compressed air to clear dirt and old material. TxDOT's spec calls for cleaning to a depth at least twice the crack width. The crack also has to be free of moisture before anything goes in.

Then the hot rubber goes in. The sealant is heated in the machine and pumped into the crack under pressure. That fills the crack to the bottom instead of capping the top. We squeegee the rest into a narrow band over the crack, and TxDOT holds that band to 3 inches wide.

A light sanding over the fresh sealant keeps it from picking up on tires. Cooler weather suits the work, since cracks sit open near their widest then. Driveways and lots take traffic again once the sealant has set and been sanded. On a lot that has to stay open, we plan the work in phases with you.

How We Work

How a Job With JEJ Asphalt & Concrete Recovery Runs

From the first call to the day you can drive on it, here is how it goes.

1

Call or text for a free estimate

Call or text (979) 595-5944, or send the form on this page. Tell us what the drive, lot or road is doing now.

2

We come out and measure

We come out, look at the ground, measure the area and see where the water goes. Then the estimate spells out the square footage, the base work and the thickness.

3

Grading and base work

We shape the site so water runs off it, then put the base down and compact it. Soft spots and failed areas get dug out and rebuilt before anything goes over them.

4

Paving day

Hot mix asphalt is laid with our LeeBoy pavers and rolled while it is still hot. Chip seal jobs get emulsion sprayed, then rock spread over it and rolled in.

5

Cure time and cleanup

We clean the site up before we leave and tell you how long to stay off the new surface. Striping or sealcoating gets scheduled once the pavement has cured.

FAQ

Crack Filling Questions, Answered

Common questions about crack filling across the Brazos Valley and about 60 miles around North Zulch. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Call (979) 595-5944

Is crack filling the same as crack sealing?
They are close, and both keep water out of the base. Federal Highway Administration guidance calls a crack that moves about an eighth of an inch a year a working crack. Those get sealed, and cracks that hardly move get filled. We look at what your pavement is doing and treat it that way.
Will crack filling fix alligator cracking?
No. Alligator cracking comes from a weak or wet base under the pavement, and it turns into potholes. Sealant cannot hold a failing base together, so that section has to be cut out and rebuilt. See pothole repair and patching for that work.
How much does asphalt crack filling cost?
It depends on how much cracking there is, how wide the cracks run and how far out the job sits. Sealant is sold by weight. A lot full of cracks takes far more material than a driveway with a few. We come out, look at the pavement, measure it and give you a free estimate.
When is the best time of year to fill cracks in Texas?
Cooler weather is better, because cracks sit open near their widest then. Federal Highway Administration guidance puts crack sealing in moderately cool weather, in the spring or fall. That gives a long window in the Brazos Valley, where no month averages below about 51 degrees. The pavement still has to be dry.
Should cracks be filled before sealcoating?
Yes. Sealer is a thin coating and it will not bridge an open crack. Filling the cracks first gives the sealer a sound surface and keeps water from getting under the new coat. On most driveways and lots we fill the cracks, then come back and seal.
Do you fill cracks on parking lots and private roads?
Yes. We fill cracks on commercial lots, church and motel lots, shop yards, private roads and driveways at the house. On a lot that stays open we plan the work in phases with you. We also handle new parking lot paving when a lot is past filling.
