Gravel Driveways and Road Base in North Zulch, TX

Gravel and Road Base · North Zulch, TX

Road base graded and rolled so water runs off

A gravel driveway is only as good as the ground under it. We build and rebuild gravel and road base driveways, ranch roads and pads across the Brazos Valley. The drive gets graded for drainage, soft spots come out, then road base goes down and gets rolled. Around North Zulch that base work is most of the job.

Road base is also the first layer under pavement. Lay it deep enough now and it can carry chip seal or an asphalt driveway later. We deliver road base, select fill, pea gravel and dirt by the load as well. Call or text (979) 595-5944 and we will come look at the drive.

What We Handle

  • New gravel and road base driveways built from bare ground
  • Rutted and washed-out drives rebuilt, regraded and re-crowned
  • Crushed limestone, crushed concrete and caliche road base placed and compacted
  • Long ranch roads, pasture roads and shared driveways graded and based
  • Parking pads, turnarounds and shop aprons in road base
  • Soft spots cut out and rebuilt before new base goes down
  • Crown and ditch lines shaped so water leaves the driveway
  • Road base, select fill, pea gravel and dirt delivered by the load

What is road base, and why does it pack down?

Road base is a graded mix of crushed rock, sand and fine material. Texans call it road base or flex base, and TxDOT specs it as flexible base in Item 247. Everything passes a 2-1/2 inch sieve, and most is smaller than 1-3/4 inches.

The small pieces fill the gaps between the big ones, so the layer tightens instead of shifting. TxDOT caps the plasticity index at 10 on its standard grade, so the fines bind without going greasy. It compacts base to 100 percent of maximum dry density, close to optimum moisture. That is why the water and the roller matter as much as the rock.

Under all of it is the subgrade, and here that means clay. The NRCS records high shrink-swell in the Zulch soil series. Where wet clay is that soft, a geotextile fabric under the base keeps the two apart. The FHWA gravel roads guide says the fabric stops wet clay from pumping up into clean rock.

Crushed limestone, crushed concrete and caliche for a driveway

Crushed limestone is quarried rock, crushed and screened to a graded mix. TxDOT's Type A flexible base is crushed stone from a single natural source, with no gravel blended in. It holds a driving surface because the broken faces lock together.

Crushed concrete is old concrete run back through a crusher. TxDOT lists it as Type D flexible base, so it belongs under a driveway. Caliche is another natural Texas material, listed as Type E. Which one fits your drive usually comes down to the material cost and the mileage.

Pea gravel is small, round and smooth, so it never locks together. The FHWA gravel roads guide says it plainly: crushed stone interlocks, and round stone shifts under loads. We deliver pea gravel, and we build driveways out of road base. Asphalt millings are the other surface we spread and roll.

Crown, ditches and culverts on a Madison County driveway

Water ruins a gravel drive faster than traffic does. The fix is a crown: the middle rides higher so rain sheds to both sides. The FHWA gravel roads guide recommends about 1/2 inch of crown per foot, roughly 4 percent.

That water has to go somewhere, which is what the ditch line and the driveway culvert are for. Madison County's driveway access checklist sets a minimum culvert of 15 inches across and 24 feet long. The precinct commissioner makes the final call on it.

Adding a layer of gravel to an existing gravel driveway needs no Madison County permit. A drive onto SH 21, US 190 or FM 39 sits on state right of way, so TxDOT permits it. Other counties write their own rules, and we build to whatever the road calls for. Longer private and ranch roads are built the same way, just wider and with more ditch.

How We Work

How a Job With JEJ Asphalt & Concrete Recovery Runs

From the first call to the day you can drive on it, here is how it goes.

1

Call or text for a free estimate

Call or text (979) 595-5944, or send the form on this page. Tell us what the drive, lot or road is doing now.

2

We come out and measure

We come out, look at the ground, measure the area and see where the water goes. Then the estimate spells out the square footage, the base work and the thickness.

3

Grading and base work

We shape the site so water runs off it, then put the base down and compact it. Soft spots and failed areas get dug out and rebuilt before anything goes over them.

4

Paving day

Hot mix asphalt is laid with our LeeBoy pavers and rolled while it is still hot. Chip seal jobs get emulsion sprayed, then rock spread over it and rolled in.

5

Cure time and cleanup

We clean the site up before we leave and tell you how long to stay off the new surface. Striping or sealcoating gets scheduled once the pavement has cured.

FAQ

Gravel and Road Base Questions, Answered

Common questions about gravel and road base across the Brazos Valley and about 60 miles around North Zulch. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Call (979) 595-5944

How thick should a gravel driveway be?
Six to eight inches of road base is the common starting point. The Asphalt Institute's driveway guidance puts a base course at 6 to 8 inches of crushed aggregate. Over fabric on soft ground, the FHWA gravel roads guide wants at least 6 inches in the first layer. Trucks and soft clay call for more; the estimate spells out yours.
What does a gravel driveway cost?
It depends on the size of the drive, the dirt work it needs, the material and the haul distance. Delivered rock is priced on the material cost and the mileage. Small jobs cannot be priced by the square foot. We come out, look at the site, measure it and give you a free estimate.
Do you deliver road base and pea gravel?
Yes. We deliver road base, select fill, pea gravel and dirt by the load across the Brazos Valley. The price depends on the material cost and the mileage, so tell us where the load is going. We can spread and roll it, or drop it where you want it.
Can a gravel driveway be paved later?
Yes, and many drives are built that way. A crowned, compacted road base is the same foundation hot mix asphalt paving sits on. If the base has held up and it drains, it can be tied in and paved without starting over. Worn low spots and soft areas get rebuilt first.
Why does my gravel driveway keep washing out?
Usually the water has nowhere to go. A drive with no crown holds rain on the surface, which softens the crust and cuts ruts. The FHWA gravel roads guide ties that rutting back to water sitting in the surface. Fixing it means reshaping the crown, opening the ditch and adding base where it is gone.
Do I need a permit for a gravel driveway in Madison County?
Madison County's checklist says adding a layer of gravel to an existing gravel driveway needs no permit. A new driveway, a new culvert or changing a dirt drive to asphalt does need one. A drive onto a state highway like SH 21 is a TxDOT permit instead. Other counties set their own rules.
